Upgrade: Palm Tungsten E to PalmOne Tungsten E2

There are even more differences, but these I feel are the major improvements. Of course, not everyone will agree with me especially about the non-volatile memory. I’ve already found that versions of certain applications simply won’t work with this new type of memory even though they worked perfectly fine on the TE. Then there’s the change of physical interface, in the form of the Multi Connector, that forces me to buy some new charging leads. Fortunately, my Krusell leather flip-top case still fits snuggly and has cutouts in the right places.

BlueTooth, Orange and Wizards

Back to the email set-up… With the built-in BlueTooth support comes additional software to allow you to configure it to your own particular equipment. A wizard took me through the process of setting up the necessary details for my Nokia 6230 on the Orange network in less than 2 minutes. It really was that simple.

Whilst SnapperMail continued to work well, I wasn’t able to migrate all of my settings and email from the TE to the TE2 just as I wasn’t able to do the same when going from the Sony Clie T665C to the TE. No great loss as I also download my emails onto my PC, but it would have been convenient to take off from where I left off. Oh, and the centre button on the D-pad no longer functions to open an email for reading. Again, no great loss and I’m sure it’s something that will be addressed in future versions of SnapperMail.

Mobile Web

I’m very impressed with the Blazer web browser. After stumbling with the Eudora Internet Suite for too long (frankly, I think it’s time they removed the “best email and browser combo for Palm OS” image), I’m now spoilt with a browser that’s faithfully rendered some of my most frequently visited websites. Granted, there’s not much blazing going on at GPRS speeds, but it’s great to see forms, cookies and JavaScript being handled to a good extent on a mobile platform.

Well, it’s still early days for me and the TE2 and I’m sure I’ll have a lot more to say about it, but since I was already (almost) quite content with the TE I’m certain that you won’t be seeing my unit on eBay any time soon.
